Endodontology deals with the nerve of the tooth (pulp). If the nerve becomes inflamed (pulpitis) or dies (pulp necrosis), toothache often occurs. Pulpitis or pulp necrosis is usually caused by very deep caries («deep hole»), accidents or fractures. The aim of root canal treatment is to preserve the tooth instead of removing it.
Many patients are afraid of pain during root canal treatment, but this is usually unfounded! With a local anaesthetic (injection), root canal treatment is usually pain-free!
