Dental anxiety in children

Especially with children, the first impression is crucial. In our practice, we organise every treatment calmly and sensitively. Our ultimate goal: your child goes home with a good feeling - and will be happy to come back.

Fear-free treatment is the foundation for lifelong dental health. When children start early Dental anxiety This can lead to a phobia, whereby important check-ups are avoided and avoidable damage (caries, periodontitis) occurs.

Our promise: Treatments are only carried out when the child feels safe. Coercion and pressure have no place in modern paediatric dentistry.

The first visit: getting to know each other without a drill

Whenever possible, the first visit No treatment takes place. Your child should get to know us and the premises without stress. Ideally, we combine this with a relaxed school dental check-up.

When was the first time? We recommend the first visit after the last milk teeth have erupted (around the age of 3 to 4 years). This is about:

  • Caries prophylaxis & brushing tips
  • Feeding counselling (handling dummy/bottle)
  • Positive reinforcement (reward for bravery)

Gentle treatment methods & distraction

If an intervention (e.g. a filling) is necessary, sensitivity is required. Even our waiting room in Biel is equipped with toys and books suitable for children.

We use special techniques to prevent fear from arising in the first place:

  1. Language suitable for children: We explain everything in a playful way. For example, we call the anaesthetic injection „sleeping drops“.
  2. Multimedia distraction: During treatment, your child can use a Television on the ceiling (with headphones) Watch cartoons.
  3. Patience: Imaginative explanations and calmness are often enough to enable successful treatment.

If there is no other option: sedation & general anaesthesia

Despite all patience, treatment can sometimes be difficult. As a specialised paediatric dentist in Biel, we offer a range of sedation options:

1. light sedation: nitrous oxide

The child remains fully conscious. The nitrous oxide has a strong anxiolytic and calming effect.

  • Advantage: As soon as the nitrous oxide is no longer inhaled, the effect is over and the child is immediately fully orientated again.

2. moderate sedation: Dormicum

With the active ingredient midazolam (Dormicum), we achieve deeper sedation. The child becomes drowsy but remains responsive.

  • Note: A certain degree of co-operation is also necessary here.

3. general anaesthesia at the Biel Hospital Centre

Your advantages in the Wildermeth Paediatric Clinic:
