Plastic fillings are mainly used in the treatment of caries (colloquially known as a «hole in the tooth») and defects following accidents. Using modern adhesive techniques, the tooth structure can be preserved to the maximum and an optimal aesthetic result can be achieved by using tooth-coloured fillings.
Small to medium-sized defects can usually be treated very well with resin fillings, which are inexpensive and also usually fulfil aesthetic requirements. In the case of very large defects, however, the plastic material reaches its limits in that it often cannot withstand the chewing load and only weak contact with the neighbouring teeth can be achieved, which can lead to more food residue between the teeth and the risk of Periodontitis increases. For large defects, we therefore recommend restorations made of ceramic (partial crowns, crowns), which are significantly more stable and discolour less quickly than plastic.
