What is a dental emergency and when should you contact the dentist promptly or immediately?

  • Sudden onset of severe pain that does not subside sufficiently with conventional painkillers and severely restricts quality of life
  • Swelling in the maxillofacial area could indicate abscesses; a dentist should be contacted quickly, especially if accompanied by a fever
  • In the event of accidents involving the teeth, the dentist should ideally be contacted immediately by telephone. Depending on the situation, a decision will be made as to whether or not treatment is required immediately.

The most common accidents involve minor to moderate fractures of anterior teeth; very rarely, the entire tooth may be knocked out (avulsion). Ideally, you should quickly place the fractured fragment or the whole tooth in a tooth rescue box (Dentosafe Box), which you can buy in any pharmacy. If you do not have a tooth rescue box available, place the fragment or tooth in milk. It is very important not to clean the fragment or the knocked-out tooth and to touch it carefully! Contact your dentist or the dental emergency service immediately afterwards.

Even if you suffer a dental accident and no damage is visible, you should visit the dentist so that the accident can be reported to the accident insurance company. If there are any late effects, you can fall back on the benefits provided by the accident insurance.
